Trek mountain gorillas along the dramatic slopes of three extinct Virunga volcanoes with Uganda Rwanda Tours—your local cross-border safari experts.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is Uganda’s smallest yet most visually dramatic jewel. Spanning just 33.7 square kilometers in the far southwestern corner of the country, this park is defined by three majestic, extinct volcanoes that pierce the clouds: Mount Muhabura, Mount Gahinga, and Mount Sabinyo.
Part of the broader, transboundary Virunga Conservation Area, Mgahinga offers an ultra-exclusive, untamed setting for discerning travelers who want to escape the more crowded trekking destinations.
Tracking mountain gorillas here is a strikingly unique experience. Because of the park’s volcanic topography, the forest floor transitions into dense, beautiful bamboo groves. This provides a brilliant, open golden-green backdrop for professional wildlife photography, with fewer thick vines than in neighboring Bwindi.
Under the guidance of private naturalists and dedicated Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers, you will scale the gentle volcanic ridges to stand in the presence of Mgahinga’s famous, tightly-knit Nyakagezi gorilla family.
These elite itineraries bypass long overland drives by utilizing private scheduled flights from Entebbe directly to the mountain-ringed Kisoro airstrip.

The ultimate southwest Uganda primate and wildlife circuit...
Mgahinga’s standout luxury advantage is its unique status as the only sanctuary in Uganda where you can experience a premium Double Primate Safari within the exact same forest ecosystem.
The park is a vital refuge for the endangered Golden Monkey (Cercopithecus kandti), a strikingly beautiful, fast-moving primate endemic to the Albertine Rift. On a bespoke multi-day trek, you can spend your first morning tracking the ground-dwelling mountain gorillas, and your second morning observing playful, shimmering troupes of golden monkeys leaping through the bamboo canopy right above you.
Mgahinga carries deep, living cultural significance as the ancestral homeland of the indigenous Batwa people—the original hunter-gatherers of the Virunga forest.
To provide a fully rounded luxury experience, we curate a private, highly immersive journey along the Batwa Heritage Trail. Led by an elder Batwa guide, this exclusive walk turns the forest into a living museum.
You will discover ancient traditional healing plants, witness survival and tracking demonstrations, and step inside the sacred Garama Cave—a 342-meter-long volcanic lava tube where the community’s council met for generations. The experience concludes with a powerful, deeply moving performance of traditional songs inside the cave, directly supporting the preservation of their heritage.
Because Mgahinga values an exclusive, low-impact approach to tourism, the luxury accommodation model here is exceptionally intimate, anchored by a single premier eco-luxury property at the park gate.

Located at the base of the Virunga volcanoes, Mount Gahinga consists of traditional stone bandhas designed to mirror local architecture. It serves as the primary luxury base for trekking gorillas and golden monkeys, as well as engaging with local Batwa cultural initiatives.

Sitting at over 2,000 meters above sea level, Clouds offers stone cottages with private butler service and wood-burning fireplaces. The lodge provides views extending across the primeval forest canopy toward the Virunga volcano range.

Uniquely positioned inside the national park boundaries, this intimate luxury camp features eight spacious canvas tents equipped with deep soaking tubs and private viewing decks. Due to its deep location within the forest, gorilla families occasionally wander directly through the camp grounds.

Erebero Hills is a luxury, bamboo-built eco-lodge situated on the edge of Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. It features eight stilted, glass-fronted suites with panoramic canopy views, a heated infinity pool, and seamless access to mountain gorilla trekking.

Overlooking the rainforest canopy, Bwindi Lodge features eight stone and timber bandas with private terraces. Guests have access to an on-site spa, a dedicated tea-tasting experience, and regular visits from local wildlife along the forest boundary.

Immersed in a forest of eucalyptus trees near the park boundaries, this property offers 21 secluded treehouse-style suites raised above the canopy. The resort provides an array of wellness and dining experiences, featuring an on-site spa, custom mixology, and private fireplaces designed to unwind after forest excursions.

Situated inside an eroded volcanic crater, Bisate Lodge comprises six thatched forest villas modeled after traditional Rwandan royal architecture. It serves as a flagship model for sustainable luxury, seamlessly integrating high-end hospitality with an active native forest restoration project.

Set directly on the border of Volcanoes National Park, Singita Kwitonda features eight modern suites and an exclusive four-bedroom villa built with local river stone and clay. Designed for high-end eco-tourism, each suite comes equipped with heated plunge pools, indoor and outdoor fireplaces, and unobstructed views of the surrounding Virunga volcanoes.

Positioned on a peninsula within Queen Elizabeth National Park, Mweya provides sweeping views of the Kazinga Channel and the Rwenzori Mountains. The lodge features a large swimming pool, full-service restaurant, and direct access to boat safari launch sites.

Converted from a historic coffee processing factory, this boutique lodge overlooks the sunken Kyambura Gorge. Contemporary suites feature wide glass windows, private verandas, and direct proximity to chimpanzee tracking trailheads.

Located on the eastern bank of the Albert Nile, Pakuba offers comfortable, hotel-style rooms situated close to major game viewing tracks. Frequent wildlife sightings, including giraffes and elephants, occur right around the lodge grounds.

Ensiko Primates Lodge, nestled 10-minute walk to Kanyanchu Gate and 8 minutes to Bigodi Village, captivates travelers with its serene location on the jungle's edge, offering scenic views from private terraces. Guests often commend the spacious, modern rooms and spotless cleanliness, enhancing the comfortable ambiance.

Situated on the northern bank of the Nile, Paraa offers traditional safari lodge accommodations with an outdoor pool and river views. It serves as a central hub for game drives across the Savannah and boat trips to the base of Murchison Falls.

Located in a quieter, eastern sector of Murchison Falls National Park, Chobe offers panoramic views over the River Nile rapids. The property features a three-tier swimming pool, health club, and extensive riverfront decking.

Situated along the Munyanga River, Mahogany Springs offers spacious suites set within landscaped gardens. Its proximity to the park headquarters makes it a practical, comfortable base for gorilla trekking.

Elevated on wooden platforms above the forest floor, Buhoma Lodge features open-air dining areas and private verandas. Built using locally sourced eco-friendly materials, it provides central access to Bwindi’s northern tracking routes.

Positioned on a high ridge in southern Bwindi, Gorilla Heights features modern stone cottages, an outdoor heated pool, and full spa services. The property offers views of the forest canopy and distant volcanic peaks.

Constructed along the valley edge in the Ruhija sector, Bakiga Lodge operates as a non-profit eco-lodge. Simple, comfortable cabins feature private balconies overlooking the forest, with proceeds directly supporting local community water projects.

Perched on a hill overlooking the Rift Valley escarpment, Enganzi offers open-sided cottages built from local materials. Its location provides easy access to game drive tracks in the Kasenyi plains.

Set along the Kazinga Channel, Bush Lodge provides a mix of self-contained tented rooms and eco-cabins. Designed to integrate into the surrounding bush, it delivers an authentic safari feel at a reasonable price point.

An eco-friendly mid-range option situated on the border of Kibale Forest, offering spacious cottages with large windows. Guests enjoy elevated forest views, a swimming pool, and convenient access to chimpanzee tracking briefs.

Tucked away in dense evergreen vegetation, this camp features safari tents equipped with basic en-suite facilities. It offers an affordable, immersed forest experience near the Kanyanchu visitor center.

Perched high on a hill outside Lake Mburo National Park, Eagle's Nest features safari tents under thatched roofs with private verandas. It offers cost-effective lodging with panoramic views across the park landscape.
Uganda’s Most Exclusive Gorilla Sanctuary
Spanning just 33.7 square kilometers, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is Uganda’s smallest yet most scenic national park. Part of the legendary Virunga Massif—which spans Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo—Mgahinga offers an uncrowded, highly exclusive gorilla trekking safari experience away from larger tourist herds.
Mgahinga is famous for hosting the Nyakagezi Gorilla Family, a stable, peaceful habituated group known for its high concentration of silverbacks. Because Mgahinga features open bamboo zones and volcanic slopes rather than dense rainforest canopy, trekking here offers incredible visibility, lighter forest paths, and spectacular backdrop vistas of Mount Sabinyo, Mount Gahinga, and Mount Muhavura.
What Makes Mgahinga Gorilla Trekking Unique?
Where Gold Meets Silver: Mgahinga is the only national park in Uganda where endangered mountain gorillas share a habitat with rare Golden Monkeys, allowing you to combine both primate treks in a single destination.
Open Bamboo & Scenic Trails: Unlike the dense rainforest brush of Bwindi, Mgahinga’s bamboo zones provide brighter light and open terrain ideal for photography.
Shorter Transit from Kigali: Located right near the Cyanika border post, Mgahinga is only a 3.5 to 4-hour scenic drive from Kigali International Airport, making it ideal for quick cross-border safaris.
Volcano Hikes & Batwa Cultural Trails: Extend your trip beyond gorilla tracking with 1-day hikes up Mount Sabinyo or the immersive Batwa Cultural Trail led by indigenous forest dwellers.
Mgahinga Permit Pricing & Planning Guide
Standard Gorilla Trekking Permit: $800 USD (Includes park entry, armed trackers, lead ranger guide, and 1 full hour with the Nyakagezi family).
Golden Monkey Permit: $100 USD per person.
Minimum Age: 15 years old.
Best Time to Visit: Dry seasons from June to September and December to February offer clear skies and drier hiking paths up the volcanic slopes.
The Nyakagezi family is famously one of the most stable and peaceful habituated gorilla groups in East Africa. Led by a magnificent dominant silverback named Mark, the family is known for having a remarkably high concentration of multiple mature silverbacks living together harmoniously. Historically, this group was famous for crossing borders into Rwanda and the Congo, but they have permanently settled within the Ugandan borders of Mgahinga for over a decade, making tracking highly reliable.
An official Mgahinga gorilla trekking permit is $800 USD per person, per trek, matching the standard rate set by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. A separate golden monkey tracking permit is $100 USD per person. Just like in Bwindi, permit fees are reinvested into full-time anti-poaching squads and park rangers, with 20% of all park entrance revenue directly funding local community development programs.
The fastest, most seamless route is via a scheduled or private executive charter flight from Entebbe International Airport to the Kisoro Airstrip, which takes roughly 90 minutes. From the airstrip, a comfortable 45-minute private 4×4 vehicle transfer brings you right to the lodge gates. Alternatively, guests can fly into Kigali International Airport in Rwanda and take a scenic 4-hour private cross-border drive through Cyanika.
Hiking in Mgahinga is a spectacular experience but requires a solid baseline of physical fitness. The trails traverse different ecological zones, starting in the lush bamboo forests and climbing into beautiful afro-montane moorlands filled with giant lobelias. The paths can be muddy during rainy stretches, and climbing Mount Sabinyo involves navigating a series of sturdy, hand-built wooden ladders secured to the steep rock faces.
