Frequently asked questions

What are Golden Monkeys, and where are they found?

Golden Monkeys are an endangered species of Old World monkey endemic to the high-altitude bamboo forests of the Virunga Volcanoes range.

How difficult is Golden Monkey tracking compared to gorilla trekking?

Golden Monkey tracking is generally easier because these monkeys stay in the lower bamboo zones, resulting in flatter hikes.

Are the Musanze Caves safe to explore?

Yes. The caves have paved trails, steps, and lighting, and are led by certified park guides provided with helmets and flashlights.

Is garden gardening or agriculture visible in the area?

Yes, the volcanic soil around Musanze is fertile, making it a key agricultural hub for potatoes, pyrethrum, tea, and coffee.

Can I combine gorilla tracking and golden monkey tracking on the same day?

No, both activities take place in the morning at the same start time (7:00 AM), requiring separate days for each.
