Frequently asked questions

How far is Volcanoes National Park from Kigali?

Volcanoes National Park is approximately 105 kilometers from Kigali, taking roughly 2.5 hours on smooth, paved roads.

Why are gorilla permits more expensive in Rwanda than in Uganda?

Rwanda positions its gorilla tourism as a high-end, low-impact conservation model. The $1,500 permit fee directly funds habitat protection, community development (10% revenue sharing), and park ranger operations.

What is the difficulty level of trekking in Volcanoes National Park?

Hikes range from easy to challenging depending on where the gorillas are located. The bamboo zones can be steep and muddy, but local porters are available to assist.

Is a 2-day tour enough time to comfortably see the gorillas?

Yes. Because the drive from Kigali to the park is short, a 2-day itinerary allows ample time for a complete gorilla tracking experience.

Can I hire a porter at Kinigi Park Headquarters?

Yes, local porters can be hired at the briefing station for $15–$20. Hiring a porter directly supports local community livelihoods.
