Frequently asked questions

Where is Mgahinga National Park located?

Mgahinga is located in the far southwestern corner of Uganda, bordering Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park and DRC's Virunga National Park.

Are Golden Monkeys habituated to humans?

Yes, the Golden Monkey troops visited by tourists are fully habituated by UWA rangers, allowing close photography.

What makes Mgahinga National Park unique?

Mgahinga is Uganda's smallest national park, protecting three extinct volcanic peaks (Sabyinyo, Gahinga, Muhavura) and offering breathtaking mountain scenery.

Is the Golden Monkey trek easier than the Gorilla trek?

Yes. Golden Monkeys live in the lower bamboo zones, which makes terrain navigation flatter and less demanding.

Can I trek Gorillas in Mgahinga instead of Bwindi?

Yes! Mgahinga has one habituated gorilla group (the Nyakagezi family), which can be requested depending on permit availability.
